Bernie should tell Gavin to cease his war against renewable energy and to shut the uninsured Diablo Canyon nukes. That would save us billions of dollars in absurdly inflated electric rates and remove the specter of an apocalyptic radiation disaster. It's far more important than the wealth tax. In 2016-8, then-Governor Jerry Brown orchestrated a monumental plan to phase out those aged, dangerous, hyper-expensive reactors & phase in a 100% renewable-based energy system.
Since then spectacular advances in battery tech and renewable efficiency have made the transition more profitable and imperative than ever. Then-Lieutenant-Governor Newsom signed the bill in 2018. The transition proceeded beautifully until 2022, when he inexplicably pulled the plug, costing us billions and exposing us all to the growing likelihood of a Chernobyl-Fukushima at Diablo, which is deeply embrittled and surrounded by earthquake faults.
Getting those reactors shut and reversing Newsom's unconscionable attacks on renewables are critical steps the state must take for its employment, economic and ecological survival. In Bernie's home state, the shut-down of Vermont Yankee has proceeded beautifully, saving the state billions of dollars and trillions of radioactive curies, while creating thousands of renewable jobs. . He needs to show Newsom how it's done.
